The Dudes
Formed in 1996, The Dudes became popular in Calgary for their unique approach to recording and releasing lo-fi albums. Their infectious mix of soul and punk earned them a devoted local following. The band gained attention with live performances characterized by their distinctive sound.
In 2006, The Dudes released their notable album Brain Heart Guitar, produced by Russ Broom. The track “Dropkick Queen of the Weekend” gained traction after being featured in a Rogers Wireless ad campaign, and the band’s music was played on major Canadian stations. Following this success, they toured across Canada, Europe, and the US.
In early 2007, the band released a music video shot at Calgary’s private Webber Academy. In 2009, their album Blood Guts Bruises Cuts was launched, followed by Barbers, Thieves, and Bartenders in 2012.
Preoccupations
Initially named Viet Cong, this post-punk band formed in 2012. After the hiatus of the band Women in 2010 and the untimely death of guitarist Christopher Reimer, former members and new collaborators came together to form Viet Cong.
Their debut album was released in 2013, and they performed at SXSW the following year. In 2015, they signed with Flemish Eye and toured North America and Europe. Amid backlash over their controversial name, the band rebranded as Preoccupations in 2016. They continue to be recognized for their dynamic and experimental sound.
Reuben and the Dark
Reuben and the Dark began as a solo project by singer-songwriter Reuben Bullock, who released the album Pulling Up Arrows in 2010. After another album in 2012, the full band was formed and signed with Arts & Crafts Productions in 2013.
Their debut album arrived in 2014, followed by extensive tours across Canada and the US. Known for their heartfelt indie-folk style, the band released new albums and charity singles, including a cover of “Bobcaygeon” to support the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund.
A dramatic incident in their history involved a tour bus crash near Banff National Park, leaving the band with minor injuries but some damaged instruments. Despite this, they continued their performances.
Kobra and the Lotus
Formed in 2009, this heavy metal band was spearheaded by vocalist Kobra Paige. The original lineup included Calgary guitarists Matt Van Wezel and Chris Swenson. Their debut studio tracks were recorded in the summer of 2009, followed by a national tour.
The band’s sound evolved significantly, leading to a rerecorded debut album that topped Canadian radio charts. In 2012, their album High Priestess earned high praise globally. After dealing with health challenges and lineup changes, Kobra and the Lotus continued to produce new music and tour internationally.
Huevos Rancheros
Active from 1990 to 2000, Huevos Rancheros left an indelible mark on Calgary’s music scene. Their eclectic mix of rockabilly, surf, garage rock, and punk resonated with local audiences. Founded by guitarist Brent Cooper, drummer Richie Ranchero, and bassist Graham Evans, the band’s name became synonymous with free-spirited performances and innovative sound.
The band signed with Mint Records in 1995 and released several albums, including the Juno-nominated Get Outta Dodge. After disbanding in 2000, members occasionally reunited for charity events.
Chixdiggit
This pop-punk band formed in 1990 when its members started selling T-shirts with the logo “Chixdiggit” before even forming the band. With funds from the sales, they bought instruments and began performing locally. By 1995, they signed with Sub Pop Records and released their debut album.
Chixdiggit became popular for their catchy, love-themed songs and youthful vibe. They toured globally, signed with Honest Don’s Records, and weathered lineup changes over the years. Despite challenges, the band remained active, releasing albums and maintaining a loyal fan base.
