She grew up with her younger brother and sister in Greenfield Park, a former town in southwestern Quebec (now a borough of Longueuil). Elisha started appearing in media at a young age. At nine, she modeled children’s clothing and footwear. At 14, she landed a role in the Canadian children’s horror series Are You Afraid of the Dark?. Her feature film debut came in 1997 with the Canadian family drama Dancing on the Moon. That same year, she co-hosted the “Hollywood FX” segment of the Canadian educational series Popular Mechanics for Kids alongside Jay Baruchel. Two years later, she was offered another hosting gig, which involved traveling the world as a correspondent. This role caught the attention of then-First Lady Hillary Clinton, who invited Elisha to the White House. Elisha’s first leading role was in the dramatic film Airspeed (No Control) in 1998. She graduated from Centennial Regional High School in Greenfield Park in 2000 and, at the age of 17, moved to Los Angeles to pursue her Hollywood dreams.

Breaking into Hollywood

After moving to Hollywood in 2001, Cuthbert landed the role of Kim Bauer in the crime-drama series 24. Her performance earned her two Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, solidifying her image as a captivating actress frequently featured on magazine covers. Elisha received her first major award, the Gemini Award, in 2001 for her role in the film Lucky Girl. In 2003, she appeared as Darcy Goldberg in the comedy Old School and Carol-Anne in Love Actually. The following year, she starred as Danielle in the teen comedy The Girl Next Door, a role that brought her widespread recognition. Her performance earned her a nomination for the 2005 MTV Movie Awards, although the film faced mixed reviews due to its controversial subject matter. In the movie, high school senior Matthew Kidman discovers his new neighbor, 19-year-old Danielle, is a former adult film actress. The film’s provocative scenes sparked criticism, and Elisha faced backlash despite her rising popularity.

In 2005, Cuthbert starred as Carly Jones in the horror remake House of Wax, alongside Paris Hilton and Chad Michael Murray. While the film achieved financial success, critics were unimpressed. That same year, she played the lead in the psychological thriller The Quiet, portraying Nina, a cheerleader dealing with sexual abuse. Elisha also served as a co-producer on the film.

Horror and Thriller Roles

Following her work in House of Wax and The Quiet, Cuthbert leaned into the horror and thriller genres. In 2007, she starred in the horror film Captivity as a model imprisoned by a psychopath. Despite her convincing “scream queen” performance, the role garnered negative reviews, and she was nominated for a Razzie Award for “Worst Actress.” The film itself received poor ratings and sparked controversy within the industry. In 2008, Cuthbert returned to television with the pilot for an unsuccessful American adaptation of the British drama NY-LON and starred in the Canadian miniseries Guns. She also served as a guest judge on Project Runway Canada. In 2010, she had a recurring role as Maxine Denver in the crime drama The Forgotten. From 2011 to 2013, she appeared in three seasons of the comedy series Happy Endings. In 2012, she hosted the American Music Awards. Later roles included a part in the dark comedy Just Before I Go (2014) and a lead role in the sitcom One Big Happy (2015), where she played a pregnant lesbian. Unfortunately, the sitcom was canceled after a few episodes due to poor reception. Between 2016 and 2020, Elisha appeared in Netflix’s The Ranch. In 2020, she had a guest role in the Canadian comedy series Jann, earning a Canadian Screen Award nomination.

Career Decline

Her breakout role in The Girl Next Door established Elisha as a rising star, but the film’s modest box office performance and her typecasting as a “girl-next-door” figure limited her career trajectory. Critics often cited her acting skills as underwhelming, and she struggled to secure more serious roles. Hollywood is an industry that demands adaptability and resilience, qualities Elisha found challenging to demonstrate. Her focus on her appearance rather than the depth of her characters further hindered her success. Comparisons with Megan Fox, who faced similar challenges in breaking away from her image, highlighted this issue. Elisha has admitted she never felt fully comfortable on set. By 35, after starring in several low-budget films, she stepped away from the limelight to focus on her family life.

Personal Life and Hobbies

In 2012, Elisha announced her engagement to Canadian hockey player Dion Phaneuf.
