How Did It All Begin?

The School of Rock is a commercial educational company that operates numerous after-school music programs in the United States, Canada, Chile, Brazil, and other countries. In total, there are 389 open schools across 16 countries, and the total number of students exceeds 65,000.

It is interesting to know how it all started. The founder of School of Rock is Paul Richard Green, an American music producer, film producer, and music teacher. It all began when, in 1996, he started offering individual music lessons at his home.

Later, Paul Green asked his students with the poorest results to come to his place and play in a group setting. As a result of this experiment, Paul Green discovered that within just three weeks, the students who played in a group setting had significantly improved in their ability to comprehend and reproduce musical material compared to those who only had individual lessons.

This music teacher then changed his teaching method by supplementing traditional education with group practice sessions and subsequent live performances. In 1999, students with the best results performed publicly for the first time at a concert organized in an art gallery.

Founding of the School of Rock

In 2002, Paul Green took out a $7,000 loan. With this money, he established the Paul Green School of Rock Music in a semi-ruined building in Philadelphia. This was the start of significant changes. For example, in 2009, the company was acquired by the investor Sterling Partners and a leadership team recruited by them. At the helm was Matt Ross, a former executive from Clear Channel. By 2010, Matt Ross remained the CEO of the company.

The school’s name was eventually shortened to School of Rock, and Paul Green left the organization. On February 12, 2013, School of Rock reached another milestone when CNN Money featured it as one of the five hottest franchises.

The main goal of the school is to have students perform live in front of real audiences. The official motto of the school is:

“Inspiring the world to rock … on stage and in life.”

A Documentary Film

In 2005, a documentary film about the Paul Green School of Rock Music was released. This story is also noteworthy because it began with filmmaker Don Argott from Philadelphia, who was initially attracted by posters advertising concerts. He and his team then reached out to the founder.

Filming began in January 2003. The documentary tells the story of Paul Green’s students and focuses on the “All Stars” program, which highlighted the music of Frank Zappa. It includes footage of students performing and rehearsing, providing an inspiring look at their daily dedication and hard work toward achieving their dreams.

The documentary gained recognition at festivals, and screenings often featured live performances by students from the school. However, it did not achieve commercial success. Viewers frequently confused it with a similarly titled Jack Black film. As a result, the documentary was pulled from theaters after just one weekend.
