Ten Foot Henry pulled off the least likely trick in a steak town: it made Calgary line up for cabbage. The Beltline all-day spot puts vegetables at the centre of the plate — not as penance, but as the most interesting thing on the table — and backs the idea with cooking sharp enough to convert the most committed carnivore.

The Concept

The name comes from a ten-foot statue of Henry, a 1930s comic-strip kid, that has knocked around Calgary for four decades — most famously anchoring the legendary Night Gallery nightclub that once occupied this very address. Operating partners Stephen Smee and Aja Lapointe borrowed the original figure back from a local theatre company and built a restaurant around it: family-style plates, all-day hours, produce first.

What to Order

The charred cabbage with mimolette and aioli is the dish that made the reputation — smoky, rich, absurdly good for a wedge of brassica. The Henry salad with tahini-miso dressing and crispy shiitake is the regulars’ baseline, the gigli cacio e pepe the comfort move, and the whipped feta disappears before anything else. Arctic char and a rib chop keep omnivores anchored; the butterscotch pudding is the mandatory landing. Four to five plates feed two people well.

The Space

Bright where most restaurants go dark: white surfaces, warm wood, greenery, and daylight pouring through the front glass onto the First Street corridor. Henry himself watches over the room. A seasonal patio adds sidewalk tables in the warm months, and the all-day format means the space shifts from laptop-light lunch to loud, happy dinner.
