One kitchen, two rooms, and a bar that runs the evening

Vintage Chophouse and Tavern has held the same Victoria Park corner of the Beltline since 2003, which in Calgary restaurant years is close to geological. What makes it worth an evening is the split personality: a white-linen dining room on one side, a New York–styled tavern with leather club chairs and live music on the other, one kitchen behind both.

The Concept · The Story

The house line is premium Alberta beef, hand-cut in-house by the executive chef rather than portioned by a supplier. Two decades of that discipline show in the trophy case: it is one of only two Calgary restaurants to take the Birks Silver Spoon Award twice, and its cellar has held a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence since 2013. Past 700 labels, plus one of the deepest by-the-glass selections in the city, make the wine list a reason to come rather than an afterthought.

What to Order

The chophouse cuts are Canada Prime — tenderloin, New York striploin, ribeye, bone-in porterhouse, cowboy rib chop — with Tajima Wagyu ribeye and tomahawk for the committed. Add bone marrow butter or brandy shallot peppercorn, and take the roasted mushrooms in foie gras butter or the lobster mac and cheese on the side. Non-steak cooking is genuine, not filler: braised beef short rib in haskap berry jus, wild-caught sablefish with Pernod cream, Alberta lamb rack, coq au vin. The bar keeps barrel-aged old fashioneds — the smoked one, the peanut-butter Lunchbox, the raisin-and-oat Uva Passa — and a Vintage Caesar garnished with house beef jerky.

The Space

The dining room plays timeless: linen, low light, booths built for staying put. The Tavern loosens the collar — full bar, screens, weekend bands. Above the main floor sits the Upper Bistro, an open mezzanine overlooking the room; the Beringer Room seats a dozen at one high circular table, and the enclosed Legacy Room hides behind its own foyer. Together the venue absorbs a first date, a board dinner and a two-hundred-person reception without any of them colliding.

Good to Know

Do I need a reservation? For the dining room on a weekend, yes — the restaurant books online and prime tables go early.

Is there live music? Yes, the Tavern hosts bands on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Can it handle a private event? Yes: semi-private for a dozen, an enclosed room for twenty-six, a mezzanine for thirty-five, or a full buyout for a couple of hundred.

What if someone in the party doesn’t eat steak? Sablefish, pan-seared salmon, coq au vin and lamb rack all stand on their own.
