JOEY Eau Claire: Where the Whole Story Started
Every national restaurant brand has a birthplace, and for JOEY it is right here in Eau Claire. What began as a single tomato-red kitchen at the market in the early nineties grew into a coast-to-coast empire — and the original address still behaves like it has something to prove, with one of the busiest patios in the city and a dining room that hums from lunch straight through last call.
The Concept
JOEY built its reputation on a simple bet: casual dining executed with fine-dining discipline. The menu borrows from wherever the flavour is — Japanese sushi bars, Southern smokehouses, Mediterranean lunch counters — and the Eau Claire location adds the geography: steps from the Bow River pathway and the footbridge to Prince’s Island Park, it is the natural finish line for a river walk.
What to Order
The sushi cones with tempura prawn and spicy mayo are the classic opener, the rainbow roll the flashier one. From the kitchen proper: Cajun-blackened chicken, hibachi wings, poke bowls and mini steak French dips with gruyère and red-wine jus. The crispy mashed-potato spring rolls remain the side everyone photographs, and the key lime pie is the dessert the brand is known for across the country.
The Space
Reclaimed warehouse brick and heavy timber beams run through both the lounge and the dining room, giving the place an industrial glow that flatters everyone after sunset. The real headline, though, is outside: a massive, lush patio that fills the moment Calgary’s weather allows, with greenery thick enough to forget you are downtown-adjacent.
Who It’s For
River-path walkers who earned a cocktail, downtown workers stretching lunch, and groups who want a lively table where the food outperforms the category.
Good to Know
Do I need a reservation? For patio season and weekend dinners, absolutely; the lounge takes walk-ins.
Is the patio heated? The season stretches generously, but on cool evenings ask for a spot near the heaters.
Is there a happy hour? Yes, daily — cocktails, wine and snacks at friendlier terms.
Anything for plant-based diners? Bowls, salads and vegetable sides make a complete meal without meat.
Is it walkable from the core? Yes — a few minutes from the office towers, right on the way to Prince’s Island Park.
